The non-governmental organization International Alert is supporting sustainable peace and remedying structural conflict causes. The organization attempts to facilitate dialogues between regional or sector conflict parties and to develop capacities in the local population for improved conflict resolution. In March 2004, the organization published a paper with recommendations on how conflict preventative contributions of companies from OECD countries, which are active in conflict regions, can be improved.

  • The Association of Development Policy of German Non-Governmental Organizations (VENRO)

The Association of Development Policy of German Non-Governmental Organizations (VENRO) is a voluntary amalgamation of some 100 German NGOs. VENRO looks into the role of renewable energies in development cooperation as well as additional topics related to the link between development, foreign, and environmental policy. VENRO researches, among other things, how poverty reduction can be designed in a way that is sensitive to conflict. For this purpose, the role of crisis prevention in the policies of the German government and various international organizations is evaluated and basic principles for conflict sensitive poverty reduction are formulated.

  • Forum Environment & Development

More than ninety non-governmental organizations that work on the links between environment and development policy are active in the Forum Environment & Development. Topics comprise, for example, the role of renewable energies in poverty reduction, the implementation of various Rio Conventions, the role of world trade, and corporate responsibility.

The British NGO Saferworld focuses part of its work on how the EU can increase its contribution to improving conflict prevention. For this purpose, meetings, research reports, and policy papers are published regularly in order to map out the initiatives to be taken up by the current EU Council presidency.
