Civil society is the first victim of environmental pollution, under-development, and conflicts. Population groups who are already economically disadvantaged and politically marginalized are particularly affected by violent conflicts as well as increasing resource degradation. Simultaneously, civil society is the fundamental pillar for implementing sustainable development and contributes in many ways to strengthening conflict prevention. In the peaceful and democratic development of states, civil society plays a significant role. It must be supported in order to improve its own rights, the adherence to human rights in general as well as the possibilities of democratic participation. In this section, some of the manifold civil society activities with regard to the area "environment, conflict, and cooperation" are portrayed and some existing networks are referenced.
